A very minor, jobberWrestling slang for a wrestler who about constantly loses DC Comics villain .
He ’ randomness chiefly luminary for having appeared in Booster Gold # 1 ( 1986 ). Which I ’ thousand certain Booster would insist is a valuable collectible .
He ’ randomness very simple to use in a narrative. Which is good .

  • Base Of Operations: Formerly Metropolis ; formerly the Dark Side Bar in Queens, New York City ; Belle Reve prison.
  • Height: 6’1” (1.85m) Weight: 275 lbs. (125 Kg.)
  • Eyes: Blue Hair: Black.

Powers and Abilities

Blackguard is boastfully and impregnable, with adequate close combat skills .
He can generate solid energy to create a mace, hammer or thrash in one hand – and a shield in the early. Those can withstand and deliver superhuman blows, but are electrically conductive .
Blackguard besides wears a suit of high-tech, bulky body armor. Its exoskeleton greatly amplifies his persuasiveness – to “ Class 25 ” or therefore .
King Faraday once stated that the power stemmed from the armor and not the man. This contradicts previous accounts. possibly he meant that the armor helps with the constancy of the solid energy construct ? Or some other No-Prize HypothesisA made-up explanation to plug a plot trap .

History (part 1)

During the 1980s Mr. Hertz was hired, empowered and outfitted by the conspiracy called The 1,000 .
presumably, he already had a condemnable career as a hood before they hired him .
In 1986, Blackguard accompanied troops to steal satellite technical school from S.T.A.R. Labs. Howbeit, their vehicle was intercepted on the direction home by the sword new ( and I do mean “ brand ” ) champion Booster Gold ( Michael Carter ) .
Blackguard didn ’ t fare ill, thanks to his world power armourStrength-enhancing body armour, like Iron Man ’ s . however, Booster tricked him into hitting a baron concluding. This shock Hertz unconscious .

Inhuman resources management

This was not Blackguard ’ s beginning failure. therefore, the 1,000 ’ mho Director decided to have him disciplined. He sent in a more competent hatchet man, Mindancer, who busted Blackguard out of prison .
When the Director advised Blackguard that they were unhappy with his performance, Hertz got fierce. But he was knocked out. His employer decided to execute him, along with the recently-captured Booster Gold .
Metropolis vigilante the Thorn ( Rhosyn “ Rose ” Forrest ) rescued them. Blackguard prepared to fight along with Booster and the Thorn – but Mindancer took over his mind .
however, the hypnotize Blackguard was dull and barren of first step. He was frankincense defeated by Skeet, Booster Gold ’ s automaton buddy .
apparently, Hertz recovered his free will when he woke up, and fled .

History (part 2)

Underworld unleashed

In 1995, the demonic lord Neron offered FaustianMaking a deal with the Devil, like literary character Faust did deals to many villains throughout the DC Universe .
Blackguard obviously asked not to be dazed anymore. He was granted what seemed to be at least average intellectual .
As contribution of his service to the Hell-lord, Blackguard was teamed up with Earthworm ( Herbert Hynde ) and Cheetah ( Barbara Minerva ). They were to occupy Warrior ’ second, Guy Gardner ’ s superhumans-themed barroom .
During the collide Blackguard was apparently incinerated by Guy Gardner. Who, at that point, was in an altered psychological state .

History (part 3)

(The events in this section occurred during the mid-2000s. This span of Justice League Classified is usually called the “Super-Buddies era”).
(There’s confusion about when the Super-Buddies material occurs. On this matter I firmly stand with the people who don’t know. And let’s not even mention the issue of Guy’s ring. I’ve assumed for this writeup that said events actually occur in 2003, as per P. Svensson  ’s advice.)


When Blackguard was seen years former, he was animated and unburned. But his Neron-improved mind was clearly gone .
He had done his prison term in prison. Hertz was obviously amply reformed, and received excellent recommendations from his parole officer .
He was besides on friendly terms with Guy Gardner ( possibly after exchanging letters while he was in prison ). therefore, they decided to open a bar together .
The dive, situated following to the office of the “ Super Buddies ” in Queens was named the Dark Side. The diagnose came from a previous supervillains prevention, but there ’ s no relative with the Dark Side Club that opened years former in Metropolis .

And then… and then…

What happened adjacent is undisclosed. The unharmed Super-Buddies thing disappeared into comic book limboWhen a character even exists, but hasn ’ deoxythymidine monophosphate appeared in comics for years .
Hertz obviously relapsed into crime, and was arrested .
He was thrown into the Belle Reve prison in Louisiana – apparently for years .

History (part 4)

When Amanda “ the Wall ” Waller was dismissed from the modern adaptation of Checkmate, she continued operating her Suicide Squad. She showed an interest in Blackguard as a member .
After some education and tests, he was assigned to a slash-and-burn mission at the corporate headquarter of Haake-Bruton. This party had weaponized a baneful virus. Said virus could easily trigger an extinction-level pandemic .
On this op Blackguard was region of the dense squad, along with Marauder, White Dragon ( William Heller ) and the General ( Wade Eiling ). They were to dispose of guards wearing replica of the cybernetic Carapax armor .
During the operation, part of the team betrayed the rest. Blackguard was beheaded by the General .

Legacy ?

Richard Hertz might be dead. On the other handwriting – he has been reduced to a charred skeleton before .
furthermore the armor is likely in the hands of the US politics. And Hertz ’ randomness powers had been artificially bestowed in the first target .
frankincense, having a new Blackguard issue in your campaign would be superficial .


formally he ’ second 5 ’ 10 ” ( 1.78m ). But he ’ s systematically drawn tall, even when out of armor .


A boisterous hood, excessively convinced in his brawn and excessively gallant for his own good .
He ’ s not besides bright either. In fact he ’ sulfur downright dumb. This seemed alleviated while the deal with Neron was in effect.

After he reforms and becomes fair Richard Hertz, he ’ s a fairly kind blue-collar type. Hertz is perceptibly ( though not laughably ) non-violent and non-confrontational… and still thick as a plank .
He prefers for people to call him “ Dick ” when he ’ s not Blackguard. He ’ s absolutely oblivious to the fact that “ Dick Hertz ” is a notoriously bad jazz band .


( Facing Booster Gold ) “ Yer gon na lose more than that, babyface ! I ’ molarity Blackguard, squirt ! And, as of now, you are a all in valet ! ”
“ For a sooper-hero, you ain ’ deoxythymidine monophosphate much, chap ! ”
( Neron-enhanced ) “ I ’ megabyte Blackguard — the human killing spree. Make a line. There ’ south no waiting. ”

  • Enhance actually produces a melee weapon (usually an infantry one-handed flail). On one hand it must be wielded just like a real weapon. On the other hand the weapon can be thrown, and can be used to inflict Bashing damage if needed.
  • Force shield produces an actual shield, which must be wielded just like a real shield (it takes up one hand, people can arm-lock it away, it can’t defend against attacks from the opposite side, etc.). It can also be used to do shield bashes (but this does not carry any special in-game benefits) and could conceivably be clumsily thrown.

Blackguard was alone briefly seen in his Neron-enhanced country .
My guess would be that his DEX, INT and WIL had been raised to 05 ( with his Weaponry following befit ), his INF and AUR were now 04, and he had a minor fury .
Those effects did not last long, though, unlike with some Neron-enhanced villains such as Blockbuster .
It is besides * possible * that Blackguard asked for some kind of immortality, or ability to survive a hardened number of mortal wounds .
This is strictly inquisitive. But this would explain the continuity bug with his seeming death at the hand of Warrior ( Guy Gardner ), and make it even more fiddling to bring him back after his seeming death in Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag.

Blackguard was lone briefly seen in his Neron-enhanced state .
My guess would be that his FGT/INT/AWE/PRE were all raised by one Rank, he had two more Ranks in some Skills ( Insight, Perception, Expertise ) and his complication about news was replaced by one about bloodlust .
It is besides * possible * that Blackguard asked for some form of immortality. Or possibly the ability to survive a set number of mortal wounds .
This is strictly bad. But this would explain the continuity bug with his seeming death at the hand of Warrior ( Guy Gardner ), and make it tied more trivial to bring him back after his seeming death in Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag.
