Hal ’ s friendship with Ollie always resonated more with me, but there ’ s no denying his bromance with Barry. These two constantly unhip do-gooders have been through a lot in concert. modern readers like me probably haven ’ triiodothyronine come across many of their team-ups, as most of them happened during the 60 ’ south and 70 ’ sulfur. Plus, Barry and Hal were dead for much of the Modern Age. But reading enough DC comics will clue you in to the bond they share. And it ’ s a bond that Waid, Peyer, and Kitson clearly adore, because this is a playfulness, endearing, fondly crafted comic.

I like how each topic basically stands on its own. This serial looks at Barry and Hal across clock, with relevant cameo pop in. Waid and Peyer situate the stories firm in pre- Crisis continuity and reference events surrounding the time period ( see Waid ’ s spectacularly nerdy introduction for when each consequence takes set ). Issue four, an court of sorts to the Green Arrow/Green Lantern “ Hard Travelin ’ Heroes ” stories, was my darling of the bunch. The person plots are o, but come on, they ’ ra secondary to the interactions between the two leads. I like late Flash and Green Lanterns estimable, but I ’ megabyte happy to say that Waid and Peyer made me appreciate Hal and Barry more.

Like much of Waid ’ s DC oeuvre, this book has a atavist Silver Age sensibility. It still manages to feel modern, though, something Waid is therefore good at. I besides learned a few things from reading this book. For case, after his trial navigate career, Hal was an indemnity research worker, plaything salesman, and truck driver. He besides blew project girlfriends faster than Barry could run. In fact, this book made clear to me a eminence that I think gives capital insight into their characters. Barry lived a stable life, with a steady career and loving wife, while Hal moved around a lot, never satisfied with where he was. see in this light, their friendship is one of opposites attracting ( issue three drives this distributor point home ).

This script is a decent companion to Waid and Kitson ’ s antic JLA: Year One. Both are great standalone stories that celebrate DC history and it characters. I highly recommend both to any DC lector.
