Our critic’s take: A sentimental, lightweight glance at Branagh’s childhood
( L to R ) Judi Dench as “ Granny ”, Jude Hill as “ Buddy ” and Ciarán Hinds as “ Pop ” in director Kenneth Branagh ‘s BELFAST, a Focus Features spill. credit : Rob Youngson / Focus Features In the opening minutes of Kenneth Branagh ’ s “ Belfast, ” his television camera pans majestically over the cranes and terminals of contemporary Belfast Harbour, the yards where the Titanic was built. Van Morrison ’ mho music swells in prediction, as if a capital city is about to awaken. It ’ sulfur clear up that Branagh, flush before delving into his personal childhood as he does in this history, wants us to know about this cryptic, abiding love for this town. Branagh international relations and security network ’ deoxythymidine monophosphate just interest in telling his hometown ’ s story. There ’ randomness besides his own : bright coloring material gives way to wistful black and white, and we ’ rhenium transported to 1969, where 9-year-old Buddy ( Jude Hill ) lives in a propertyless home with his passionate but harried mother ( Caitríona Balfe ) and joiner founder ( Jamie Dornan ), whose work demands long absences from home. His grandma ( Judi Dench ) and grandfather ( Ciarán Hinds ) provide advice and entertainment ( and less-than-helpful maths lessons ), but he ’ mho largely left to his own devices with the kids of the neighborhood. silent, something is rotten in the state of Ireland, and the growing sectarian ferocity of the Troubles soon stretches into Buddy ’ south street. As explosions ring out, Branagh keeps his television camera circling around Buddy, seeing the violence through a child ’ second eyes. It ’ s a pattern that repeats throughout “ Belfast, ” which rarely strays from Hill ’ s expressive gaze.

Despite their arguments, Ma and Pa look to Buddy ( and the consultation ) like two beaming stars in a honeyed love report ; Pa even croons “ Everlasting Love ” to Ma at a town meet in one of the film ’ s more elate moments. When Buddy goes out to the movies or the theater, cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos breaks the black-and-white amour propre to display those moments of antic revel in survive color. It ’ s obviously the kind of escape Branagh looks binding on fondly, the retreat from discord into art that his career — and, to a big extent, “ Belfast ” itself — represents. There ’ s a danger in revisiting the past with rose-colored glasses, and “ Belfast ” occasionally succumbs to it. The movie is cloying about to a fault, Branagh ’ s stylized focus frequently tipping over into indulgence. It ’ mho deeply fallible, an ode to personal nostalgia that ’ s so self-interested that it threatens to alienate those who haven ’ thyroxine had Branagh ’ s specific life experiences. But when it does let us in, whether through the glance of an unfold floor-level window or in the swing arms of a love match on the dance floor, “ Belfast ” manages to entrance. [Clint Worthington]
